Last weekend, a hardy group of swimmers joined us down on the banks of the West Reservoir Centre in London; to help us kick off our 2013 event season, at Round 1 of the Sport Pursuit Splash!
Arriving at the West Reservoir Centre around 6am, we were struck by the juxtaposition of the glassy-black waters and the city skyline surrounding it – it’s a stunning little oasis in the middle of the city (and all the more peaceful at dawn on a Sunday)! The first competitors arrived around 30 minutes later, keen to explore the venue for themselves, and get their toes into the 13C waters! Whilst nervous whispers circled about the cold, dark waters facing them; one hardy swimmer denounced it as ‘tropical’ compared to Scotland, and two braver swimmers even took to shunning their wetsuits!
When it came to the start-time, everyone was split into one of six waves – grouped by distances – and all hit the water with eager determination. Smiles were seen throughout (for a swimmer’s view, have a read of Jenny Landreth’s write-up bitly.com/1623Lec), and before we knew it the front-runners were paddling back into shore! A quick hand back onto the jetty and time for a little chat with some of the team (including team member Lucie, who scored third place in the Women’s 3000m) before tea and medals (handed out by our Bryn); then off to enjoy the afternoon!
We had an absolute blast hosting at this intimate venue; a big thank you to CapitalTri and the West Reservoir Centre, but most of all to the men and women who decided to shun their lie-in for an icy plunge! Looking forward to the rest of the Open Water Swim Series this Summer; not to mention the Aquathlon – Round 1 kicks off on the 16th June; we’ll see you there!
