Gearing up for the TNT Great British Bike Ride

Many cycling enthusiasts will be gearing up for The TNT Great British Bike Ride in August, so here are some tips on the best cycling clothing for all participants hoping to take on a real challenge.

The event starts at Land’s End on August 28 and ends at Twickenham Stadium on September 1 and completed over the five days gives cyclists the opportunity to raise funds for deserving charities. When taking on a challenge like this, it’s of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable in your cycling clothing, and make sure you don’t overheat or get soaked through in a downpour (which is becoming quite a regular occurrence these days!)

Layering is always advisable when taking on a long cycle challenge, so try wearing a next to skin layer, which wicks away moisture from the body, an insulating middle layer and a weatherproof outer shell. Remember it’s always easier to take layers off. Competitors taking part in the five day TNT Great British Bike Ride will have all accommodation, facilities, food and support provided for them, so all they need to worry about is what they are wearing on the ride.

2XU has a range of compression and technical cycling clothes which offer breathability, and Skins also has a wide selection of specialised cycling clothing made for comfort and performance.

If you’re using clipless pedals, then make sure you choose shoes that work with your cleats. In recent years the variety of cycling shoe has really shot up. Road cyclists should look for a lightweight, aerodynamic shoe with slick soles. Try Pearl Izumi for some specialised bike shoes and a wide range of technical cycling clothing. BONT offers high performance and lightweight cycling shoes which will make you feel comfortable on the bike.

If you’re looking for more specialised bike equipment rather than cycling clothing, then SRAM road products have gears and derailleurs, brackets, chains, and all things bike related that will ensure you coast the route as easily as you can over the course of the challenge.

Overnight stops during the event will be hosted by local rugby clubs and a tented village will be ready and waiting at the end of each day, with hot food, drinks and hospitality.

If you’re wanting to enter the 2012 event, you need to enter through one of the events benefitting charities. Although entry is free you will have to pledge a minimum of £1500 of sponsorship which will need to be collected by the start of the ride in August.

So, if you think you have what it takes to face the challenge of The TNT Great British Bike Ride, you can sign up now and be ready for August 27, 2012 – registration day.
